PORT-LOUIS, MAURITIUS
Municipal theatre
Project ongoing
Morphos Architects won in 2010 an architectural competition launched by the Municipality of Port Louis for the renovation of the 1900 century Port Louis.
The Port Louis Theatre is a very significant colonial and historic building. Unfortunately, the renovations done to the building over the past two centuries and lack of maintenance, has left it structurally weak, aesthetically outdated and generally lacking the grandeur that a city theatre should have.
The main design objectives were not to transform but rather to preserve the original structure of the theatre while implementing the original construction methods and techniques used. All the technical aspect for the proper functioning of a theatre were however integrated in the design. The tourism office, café, exhibition spaces and function venue were integrated in the design.
